21 Fryma is Found
Day after day, Tusia wrote letters to Hania, pleading for them to find and bring Aunt Fryma into the bunker. She assured her that we would do everything we could to minimize the work and risk. She promised to pay whatever she could after the war to make amends for her efforts. Tusia even promised her full possession of the property that our parents and grandparents had owned in Tluste. She tried to convince her of the spiritual benefits that would come her way for saving another human being. She appealed to her religious side, reminding her of the âreward in heavenâ she was bound to receive.
Finally, after many letters and promises, Hania gave in and agreed to let Timush search for our aunt. We were all elated, showering her with our gratitude. Timush began his quest, while we waited to hear any news.
Several days passed without any word regarding Fryma's whereabouts. We had no idea whether she had survived or not, but we tried to stay optimistic. Then, one day, a message passed down through the flue with the joyful words: Fryma is found!
We were overcome with excitement and prepared to welcome her. Hania decided it would be best for Lubko to go live with her mother now that Fryma was coming to the bunker. They had been very careful not to let him know that we were hiding there and so far, they had kept it from him. But now that another person was joining us, she felt it would be more difficult to shield him.
Timush had located our aunt in a nearby work camp. The prisoners of this camp had survived extermination so far, in part because of the efforts of a German officer who was in charge of the camp. His name was Vati and he made a successful case that the work being done there was essential to the German war effort. While life at the camp was still very difficult and the work was hard, Vati did everything he could to keep the prisoners alive. He was much more humane in his treatment of the prisoners than Germans at other camps.
When Timush found Fryma, she was in very bad health. She wasnât much more than skin and bones and the trauma from what had happened to our family had wrecked her emotionally. Naturally, she was very suspicious and fearful when Timush showed up to the camp to secure her release. She didnât know whether to trust his claim that we were still alive. When he announced that he was going to take her to us, she hesitated. By now the life at the camp was familiar to her, and she knew that she was in relative safety compared to what she might face outside. After all that she had experienced, she could hardly bear the thought of risking the move to a hiding place where she would deal with a new set of dangers. On top of that, Timush was very secretive about where he was taking her and didnât reveal much information about the bunker.
